Mothra implements a beamspace equalizer that includes a novel preprocessing engine and nonlinear data detector for millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiuser (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless systems. The design supports 64 basestation antennas and up to 16 users that can communicate with modulation schemes up to 256-QAM. The preprocessing engine consists of Gram matrix computation and linear minimum mean-square error (LMMSE) preprocessing with a novel block-Cholesky matrix inversion algorithm for high-data-rate two-stage equalization. The nonlinear data detector implements a novel soft-output block coordinate descent algorithm that is able to surpass LMMSE data detection under challenging mmWave channel conditions without a significant increase in power consumption.
Mothra, the name of this ASIC, is a gigantic monster moth, first appeared in "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" (2019) and it is continuing the Kaiju tradition started with Garamon.
